rusturf tunnel is a place nick avoids when he can, its depths too close for comfort for a man who has always yearned for the sky. still, duty calls, and he finds himself here more often than he'd like, boots crunching on the loose dirt and gravel. the air is heavy with the scent of damp earth and something else, something acrid that catches at the back of his throat.[break][break]

he's not alone. up ahead, a faint glow pulses, casting eerie shadows on the tunnel walls. as he approaches, nick sees it's an aegislash, its blade and shield emitting a radiant light. the pokemon levitates back and forth, facing a corner of an adjacent cave, it's shield raised. nick can feel the aggression rolling off it in waves.[break][break]

this isn't the first time he's encountered these glowing beasts. they've been appearing more and more frequently, protecting what they may see as their territory. he has been told that they have been appearing on purpose, but nick is unsure of what to make of these reports, much less of the strange beasts themselves. worst of all, when nick follows the direction of the glowing aegislash's body, he lays his eyes upon a small nacl, drawn into a corner, and steadily being advanced upon by the aegislash. it's with an ache in his heart that he realizes he can't stand to see the poor thing be cowed by the blade any further.[break][break]

nick moves six paces around the aegislash, hoping to find a good angle by which he might catch the blade off guard, only to find that he's misplaced one of his feet, and a small rock clatters out from beneath his boot. like an alarm has been triggered, the aegislash whips around, and nick presses against the back wall of the cavern out of hope that the aegislash may not have noticed.[break][break]

alas, it has. slowly, it levitates towards nick.

Juliana was still going through the onboarding process with the Rangers here in Hoenn, so she wasn't that 'experienced' when it came to proper fieldwork. However, hands were short these days with the war efforts going on.

[break][break] So when asked if she could look into this strange 'phenomenon' that was occurring within the region, of course she said she could handle it on her own.

[break][break] How foolish that was.

[break][break] It would seem that would be her first and last time overestimating her abilities. Juliana was capable, that much was true, but she had underestimated the strange happenings that occurred here in Hoenn.

[break][break] When met face to face with a goliath version of an ancient Aegislash she realized just how out of her depth she was.

[break][break] The creature emitted a glow that painted the damp cavern walls in a golden light. It inched closer and closer towards her, cornering her as it threatened to end her futile existence with one blow from it's heavy shield.

[break][break] Meanwhile, Juliana was wracking her brain for a plan while Wynter, her Froslass, staid on stand-by beside her. If they acted hastily that could prove their very last mistake. Jules' didn't want to rush into anything but she was going to be forced to make a decision soon, otherwise she'd be crushed meat.

[break][break] That's when the sound of a rock being kicked echoed through the chamber. Sanguine pools snapped towards the direction of the sound just as the Aegislash did. However, the moment it turned it's back on her was the opening that she'd been waiting for. With a click of her tongue and a nod towards her Froslass, Julianna lowered herself in stance as her hand gripped the sheathe of her blade.

[break][break] Wynter began to conjure pink and blue mystical flames beside herself by the dozen. Each ball of flame pooled together to form bigger ones before she began to launch a barrage of WILL-O-WISP at the backside of the Aegislash.

[break][break] The moment the balls of sinister flame hit the Aegislash was the moment Juliana rushed forward. Her speed was intense as she blitzed from one corner of the cavern towards her target.

[break][break] Using her momentum to her advantage she jumped up in the air, aiming for the Aegislash with a spinning slash, hopefully aiming for what she assumed could be a possible weak point.

[break][break] The key here was to make the most of the moment while it was distracted with their newest arrival.

in many ways, life as a pokemon ranger is a constellation of near misses and happy accidents; in other ways, it's an endless march of uncertainty and terror. nick supposes that, for a young ranger like the woman that appears in the cavern, the sky and earth are not so separate. for a young ranger like her, the world is a larger place. a wildcard.[break][break]

as nick stumbles back, he finds himself in the middle of a frenzy of pink and blue flames that light up the cavern like a twisted aurora borealis. the momentary relief that washes over him when he sees that the aegislash has not turned its attention to him is quickly replaced by the realization that it's instead focused on the froslass and its trainer as they embark on a mission to slay this strange beast.[break][break]

then there's the flash of a blade, the scream of metal against metal, and the sound of labored breathing. it's juliana, aiming for the aegislash, seeking out its weakness. but nick's not a betting man, and he doesn't want to leave this to chance. chances are what have led him to this moment, after all. his hand flies down to his belt, fingers brushing against the cool surface of one pokeball. none of his pokemon will be effective against this foe, but perhaps they might distract the beast long enough to allow the swordswoman to get a hit in.[break][break]

niamh, his toucannon, appears in the cavern in a brilliant flash of light. the light show continues as her beak begins to glow, and she streaks like a comet towards the aegislash. BEAK BLAST makes contact with the aegislash's shield—an opening is made.

The barrage of pink & blue mystical flames serve to divert the beast's attention once more but it was the joint attack from the stranger that allowed Jules the opening she needed to strike the aegislash in a vital spot.

[break][break] But she'd need to do more than that to take down this phantom. Juliana gritted her teeth as her Charcadet appeared by her side. Wynter continued her own barrage, amping up the fire power, while Helios began to glow. Burning hot embers popped off it's body. Within seconds Juliana recognized what it was attempting to do and it's reckless.

[break][break] "Helios no!" she shouted but it was too late. "FALL BACK!" she shouted to the stranger as she managed to retreat back scooping up her Froslass as she did so. Suddenly speaking, only to yell, irritated her vocal chords. She could already taste the iron in her mouth from the very act, but she had to warn them and she had no time to do so.

[break][break] Meanwhile, the Charcadet ignited the whole room, utilizing a giant LAVA PLUME within the cavern. Within moments the area around the aegislash was scorched in a towering scarlet inferno. The heat was brutal but luckily Jules had been fast enough to take cover.

[break][break] The problem was the aftermath. The cave trembled with tremors while the enclosed cavern began to fill with smoke. Jules coughed as she attempted to see through the smoke, but she couldn't make anything out.

smoke claws at his lungs, and nick feels as though he's breathing in needles. he can't see anything, but he knows enough to follow the sound of juliana's voice. 'fall back!' she yells, and her froslass disappears into the aether once more, the brilliance of its light sucked into the hungry darkness of the smoke.[break][break]

niamh, loyal as ever, returns to her ball with haste. the toucannon is many things, but nick knows that she is not one for such heat and grime. as he stumbles back to his feet, as his vision swims in front of him, he knows that whatever comes next will require him to lean on his wits alone.[break][break]

the tremors beneath his feet are a cause for concern. the caves are unstable, this whole region is unstable with each faction vying for a slice of the cake, and the sight of the lava plume calls to mind disasters from his youth—disasters that claimed entire towns and caves that were home to powerful pokemon. this, this is something different entirely. this is powerful, perhaps even more so than anything else he's seen.[break][break]

but the warmth he feels is the faintest hint of relief. after years in the cold air of the sky pillar, warmth is what he's been chasing, what he's been yearning for. nick is not a man of action, but in the name of warmth and safety, he will do what he must.[break][break]

"we have to get out of here!" he shouts, his voice strained with effort. "follow my voice—i'll lead you out!"[break][break]

if he's going to get out of here, he's not going to do it alone. he owes juliana that much for her help with the aegislash. with a shift of his shoulders, nick begins to run, seeking the cool air of the sky on his face.
